Most couples walk in nervous. We see it every single week and honestly we get it because for a lot of people this is the first time they've ever had to describe a colour scheme out loud to a stranger. Booking wedding florals with us always starts the same way and it's nothing like the intense meeting people build up in their heads before they walk through our door.
We ask couples to bring photos. Not a hundred of them. Three or four that actually capture a feeling rather than a folder of Pinterest screenshots nobody's looked at properly. Fabric swatches help too if the dress or the bridesmaid colours have already been picked. And bring your venue name because half our questions depend entirely on where the ceremony and reception are actually happening.
We had a couple last spring turn up with a single photo of a hallway in an old European hotel. No flowers in the shot at all. Just warm light and a stone floor. That one photo told us more about their taste than a whole folder would have and we built their entire palette around the mood of that image instead of chasing specific flower types. Funny how that works sometimes.
We're not trying to catch anyone out with hard questions. We ask about budget early because dancing around money wastes everyone's time and we'd rather be upfront from minute one. We ask how many people are in the bridal party since that number quietly drives a big chunk of the total cost. We ask whether either partner has allergies because nobody wants a sneezing groom standing at the altar. Small detail. Gets missed constantly.
A first consultation for wedding florals usually runs about 45 minutes with us. Some run shorter if a couple already knows exactly what they want. Some run past an hour if there's a lot to work through especially with bigger weddings involving multiple venues or a ceremony and reception in different locations across the same day.
We NEVER quote a final price in the first meeting and we tell every couple that upfront so nobody leaves confused. Proper costing takes time because we need to check stem availability for the actual wedding date and confirm seasonal pricing before putting a number on paper. What you will walk away with is a rough shape of the plan and usually a small mood board we put together within a few days of meeting.
Most couples need at least one follow up meeting before signing anything and that's completely normal in our experience. We'd rather someone come back with questions than sign off on something they're only half sure about. A second meeting usually runs shorter because most of the groundwork's already been done and we're just refining details like exact flower counts or swapping one bloom for another based on the season.
Plenty of couples bring a parent or a wedding planner and that's completely fine with us. Sometimes it actually speeds things up because someone in the room already has strong opinions on colour or budget and it saves a round trip of messages later. Occasionally it slows things down when two people disagree on the spot but we've learned to just let that play out and step back for a minute.
Do I need to book a consultation before getting a florist Melbourne quote Yes we always meet or speak with couples before putting together pricing because every wedding is different and quotes without context aren't accurate.
Can I do the consultation over video call instead of in person Absolutely plenty of interstate and destination couples book through video and it works just as well for most of the planning process.
How far out from the wedding should I book the first meeting Most couples come in somewhere between eight and twelve months out though we can absolutely work with tighter timelines when needed.
Is there a cost for the initial consultation itself No the first meeting is free and there's no obligation to book anything afterward if it's not the right fit for you.
Come in with a rough idea and leave the fine details to us because that's genuinely the part we love most about this job. Booking wedding florals shouldn't feel like an interrogation and if a florist makes you feel that way in the first meeting that's a fairly reliable sign to keep looking elsewhere.
