Before Emmitt Till, there was Willie James Howard (born July 13, 1928) a 15 year old boy living in Live Oak, Suwannee County, Florida. He was killed for allegedly writing a letter to a white girl on January 2, 1944. The girl's father found the letter and he & his accomplices went to Willie's home and took the youth from his mother at gunpoint. They picked up Willie's father where he worked and then drove to the Suwannee River. There they bound Willie by the hands and feet, and forced the youth to choose between getting shot or jumping into the Suwannee River. After his father said he could do nothing to save him, Willie jumped into the river and drowned.
There was a federal investigation but, no convictions followed.
