It’s no wonder remy hair weaves are so popular - they allow you to experiment with your self-expression and offer incredible style. That said, there are some mistakes people often make when wearing weaves, even if they’ve been using them for years! Here are the top human hair weave mistakes you need to avoid.
1. The weave doesn’t match your natural hair texture
It doesn’t get any worse than this. A
weave hair is successful when no one can tell it’s a weave, and you can’t pull off that effortlessness if the hair extensions don’t match your natural hair texture! Make sure your hair extension has the same look and feel as your real hair, regardless of whether your hair is finely textured or coarse.
2. The weave doesn’t have enough hair
You may opt to get fewer
hair bundles because you want the weave to look natural. But it’s crucial that you don’t go too far the other way! Longer hair requires more bundles to avoid your hair becoming see-through. If your hair is up to 16 inches long, get two bundles for natural looking fullness. If it’s between 18 to 22 inches, get three. And if it’s longer than 24 inches, you’ll need at least four or more. Of course, the number of bundles you need, will also depend on the size of your head, but this is a good rule of thumb.
3. You don’t cleanse your weave enough
Your weave isn’t going to look good if you forego maintaining it through consistent cleansing and conditioning. Cleanse your hair on a weekly basis using a co-wash and conditioner. Every four weeks, shampoo the hair and give it a deep conditioning treatment. And remember: avoid products containing sulfates, glycerin or silicone, since these can dry out your extensions and cause them to be damaged faster.
Oh, and remember to wash the natural hair beneath the weave too!
4. You opt for a cheap installation
Does it really make sense to spend hundreds of dollars on a quality weave, and then skimping on the installation? Make sure you find a professional stylist who can install your weave properly.
And while we’re on the subject of cost, don’t skimp on the hair either! Your hairpieces are an investment, and it’s crucial you find quality
natural hair weave. It shows when you don’t.
5. You leave your weave in for too long
As great as weaves are, you can’t really expect to leave them in for months on end without expecting some damage. Given proper maintenance, you can safely wear weaves for around 12 weeks, but following that point, they quit acting as a protective style, and start causing damage. Weaves worn for too long cause breakage and prevent your scalp from breathing.
If you have fine or thinning hair, you shouldn’t leave your weave in for more than six weeks. If your hair has normal to heavy thickness, 12 weeks is the maximum amount of time you can leave it in.
Avoid these mistakes and you’ll soon see healthier, beautiful hair!
