PSA: Colin Kaepernick. Never heard of this young man until recently, but that doesn't matter. He is receiving ridicule for not standing for the National Anthem during a game due to his personal convictions surrounding injustice. He remained seated.
As a military veteran, I support him. As a Black woman, I support him. He is righteous in his stance. It is just. Many have paid the ultimate price for freedom yet it is elusive to many people in this country, especially Blacks.
This country owes a tremendous debt to Black people. This country was built off our sweat and suffering for centuries yet we are denied basic liberties that the dominant society enjoys.
Yet Colin's protest, which is nonviolent and nonconfrontational has people upset and outraged. When people are more outraged at a simple defiant gesture than they are of genocide you have to question the very moral fiber of those individuals.
He will receive more ridicule and even death threats, because freedom isn't free. You have to sacrifice something for it. Thank you Colin for the reminder.
